As we begin another year together, it’s a good opportunity to share a few updates with you about what to expect from the club in 2020.  The Board of Directors has been working hard the past few weeks in order to prepare for 2020, and ensure that we’re in the best position, as a club, to have a fun and exciting year in 2020!

Foremost, instead of a quarterly/seasonal update, this message will now be a monthly update on news and events for the ARCA and regional amateur radio interests.  Hopefully this will be more beneficial to you.

Carl Bosard (AJ4AU) is already making plans for Field Day 2020, and we’re officially launching our Field Day effort in January this year.  You should expect a fun, and completely different Field Day this year!

Regarding January, please read through the updates below.

2020 Board of Directors

After the election at this past November General Meeting, the ARCA Board of Directors now has the following officers and directors:

President: Chris Clark – K4NXA
Vice President: Carl Bosard – AJ4AU
Secretary: Jenn Ruby – KI7TEH
Treasurer: Ray Gannaway – KJ4HZ
Director – 1 Year: Vacant
Director – 2 Year: John MacDonald – K4BR
Director – 3 Year: Bob Hunter – KC4KPN
Director – Defacto: David Vine – WA1EAW

The Board will make an appointment for the Director – 1 Year position to be confirmed at the January General Meeting.

January General Meeting

The January General Meeting for 2020 will be held on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at the POB-1 building, 1305 Interstate Parkway, in Augusta.  Being the first meeting of the year, we have many items on the agenda to discuss; however, we’ll be keeping it fun with some great presentations and several opportunities to take home some prizes!

For simply attending the meeting, you will be eligible for one of the door prize giveaways!  There will be eight “mystery bags” containing an assortment of electronics components, which should make any tinkerer happy.  There will also be several other items being given away.

Before the meeting begins, raffle tickets will be available for sale.  After the meeting adjourns, but before the presentations begin, there will be at least three drawings for raffle prizes.  Raffle prizes include IoT devices, a Raspberry Pi, and some SATA hard disk caddies.

Finally, there will be two presentations after the meeting adjourns.  The first presentation will be “The Language of Amateur Radio” by David Vine.  The next will be a presentation given by Chris Clark, which will cover software TNCs and digital operations.

So please, join us for the fun and great information, but also help us launch this year’s ARRL Field Day effort and make plans for the first events of the year.

Winter Field Day

This year’s Winter Field Day event will be held the weekend of January 25 – 26, 2020.  Although the ARCA is not hosting a Winter Field Day event, the Amateur Radio Club of Columbia County is hosting a Winter Field Day event at Camp Tanglewood, in Evans, GA.  Their event is open to the public and they’d be very happy see you there.

You can find more information on the ARCCC’s Winter Field Day Page.

Greenwood Hamfest

The Greenwood Amateur Radio Society is hosting their annual Hamfest on January 11, 2020.  The Hamfest is once again being held at the Medford Event Center on the Piedmont Technical College campus in Greenwood.  Tickets are $8 and there will be a talk-in.

More information is available on their Hamfest Flyer.

I appreciate the time you took to read this message, and I hope you’ll take a bit more time over the coming weeks to meet with us and help with some of the wonderful activities we have planned for this year.  I think this is going to be a really great year.

I look forward to seeing you soon!

Best Regards,
Chris A. Clark, K4NXA
President, Amateur Radio Club of Augusta
